A man from Westchester County fell to his death from a bridge when he attempted to help a car accident victim. The man fell almost 50 feet off the bridge, according to New York State Police. He was running to aid the accident victim and was not aware of a large gap between lanes.
According to police, Kevin Ryan, a 44-year-old Mount Kisco resident, was traveling on Route 23 in Catskill, just 30 miles south of Albany, at approximately 10:45 PM on Sunday, June 28, 2009, when he spotted an overturned vehicle in the westbound lane of the road.
Ryan apparently stopped to help the driver who had been involved in the car accident. He was unaware of the 17-foot wide gap that separates the eastbound and westbound lanes of the bridge and as a result, plunged nearly 50 feet to the rocks and concrete below. Ryan was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the overturned vehicle suffered minor injuries and was treated at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
