New York Car Accident Injures Two People During Road Rally Event

Posted on Jun 29, 2009

A dark cloud fell over the New York Road Rally event after a serious car accident injured two people.  Mark Lawrence, a South Orange, New Jersey resident, was driving his modified 1985 Volkswagon Golf when he failed to negotiate a turn properly on Rogue’s Harbor Road.  As a result, he crashed his vehicle into a tree on the passenger’s side.

Eamonn Sweeney, a Dorchester, Massachusetts resident, was the navigator in Lawrence’s car at the time of the New York car accident.  He appeared to have suffered internal head injuries and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, based on standard protocols.  Sweeney was unconscious following the crash.  Lawrence fractured his collar bone and was taken to Ellenville Regional Hospital for treatment.

Sweeney was put in an induced coma during his treatment.  Based on reports, he had regained consciousness and was diagnosed only with a sprained knee.

According to Rich Otis, a representative of Rally New York, Sweeney’s injuries appeared worse at the scene.  Otis said that injuries from racing accidents are rare and that people run off the road occasionally.   He went on to describe racing as a good family sport that many people enjoy.

Some critics of the Road Rally are concerned about safety.  One opponent said that he was the first one on the scene in Lawrence’s crash.  He said that no one was on scene and that he had to call 911 and help the driver out of the car.
