Baby monitor recall

The FDA has upgraded their April 23, 2009 recall of the SmartMonitor 2 Infant Apnea Monitor to the federal Class I recall list.  The federal Class I recall list is the highest and most serious recall class possible because it means that the product has the potential for serious health risks or even death.

The Infant Apnea Monitor was added to the Class I recall list yesterday because the product, which is supposed to keep continuous track of the infants heart rate and breathing, fails to trigger the alarm to go off when the infants breathing or heart rate reach dangerously low levels.

Respironics, the maker of the product, has advised that the Infant Apnea Monitors affected by the recall were manufactured between January 16, 2008 and November 13, 2008 and were distributed between January 17, 2008 and December 31, 2008.

If you have this defective product in your home stop using it immediately!  The FDA has announced that if you are a consumer, hospital or health care provider using this equipment to return all units to Respironics.  They have also advised that if you have suffered injuries to go to your nearest hospital immediately or call 911.
